A one mana can chip in for some unblockable damage early, and then in the late game this gives you a pretty great thing to spend mana on, as 3/2 Wolves can quickly overwhelm most board states

You'll often find a way to make black mana by the time you're ready to cast your Garruk, and even if you don't, having one card stuck in your hand for a little while isn't a complete catastrophe
Your opponent is then unable to cast spells, while you use artifact mana and low casting casts to slowly escape from jail and take control of the game while keeping your opponent locked down
It also helps that I had pretty consistent pulls across all the products I opened
